Applicants Sought for 3M/NMRT Professional Grant

We are excited to announce that members of ALA’s New Members Round Table (NMRT) can apply to receive a grant, sponsored by 3M Library Systems, which will cover expenses to attend the ALA Annual Conference, June 23 – 28, 2011 in New Orleans, LA.

You will see how professionally rewarding attending an ALA conference can be.

Call for Mentors & Mentees

NMRT Mentoring Committee is looking for participants in this year’s Career Mentoring Program lasting from October 2010 to July 2011.

Conference attendance is not required. Membership in ALA is required, and NMRT membership is encouraged. Applications are due September 30, 2010, with the goal of notifying the matching pairs by the middle of October.

Job Search Tips and Skills Guide for Librarians

Over the past couple of days the LITA listserv has been very active discussing advice for people considering getting an MLS.  NMRT’s  Online Discussion Committee has been leading a discussion about advice for new librarian right out of school.

Find a job right now – either your first or a new opportunity – is challenging.  This morning I saw a link to a blog post by Bobbi Newman (@librarianbyday) come across on Twitter.  She pulled together advice from across the web related to the MLS degree, job search in the library world, general professional advice and skills that a librarian might needed.

Seeking Resume Reviewers for ALA Annual Conference in Washington DC

Ready to give back? Volunteer to be a Reviewer for NMRT’s Resume Review
Service and make a difference in a librarian’s career!

We are seeking librarians with significant experience in human resources, the hiring process or search committees to review resumes & cover letters. This service is sponsored by NMRT to assist all job seekers, especially those new to the profession.

Who may apply to be a reviewer?
Librarians in any area (cataloging, reference, management, technical services, etc.) and in any setting (public, academic, school, special, archives, vendor, etc.) with significant experience in human resources, the hiring process, or search committees.

How does it work?
Reviewers meet with a job seeker for 30 minutes and give constructive advice on how to improve his or her resume and/or cover letter. Reviewers comment on overall presentation, layout, organization, content and spelling/grammar issues. More information is available on our page.

Where will the service take place?
The ALA Placement Center in Hall C, Lower Level 2 of the Washington Convention Center.

When will the service take place?
Saturday, June 26, 2010: 9 am – 5 pm
Sunday, June 27, 2010: 9 am – 5 pm

Reviewers are scheduled for one-hour time slots. We welcome you to volunteer for both days and/or multiple time-slots or if you are available to help us fill in schedule gaps.

How do I volunteer to be a resume reviewer?
Send your name, title, current employer (if applicable), area of expertise, and preferred date and time to Haiyun Cao, nmrtrrs@yahoo.com. Please include a few sentences about your experience with hiring, search committees, or human resources.
