Volunteer for NMRT Committees!

NMRT is looking for volunteers to appoint to NMRT Committees for 2013-2014! Committee members will begin serving as of July 1, 2013 and will continue through the 2014 Annual meeting in Las Vegas. You must be a dues paying member of NMRT to serve on a committee.

Many NMRT committees do not require conference attendance, but please note that, for some committees, attendance at the Midwinter and/or Annual Conferences is expected.

As some committees fill up quickly, we recommend selecting all committees you are interested in being appointed to. If you are interested in multiple committees, please rank the committees in order of your preference. Committee information can be found here (http://www.ala.org/nmrt/oversightgroups/comm) and detailed descriptions of committee work and responsibilities can be found here  (http://wikis.ala.org/nmrt/index.php/Section_4:_Committees).

If you are interested in serving, please complete the NMRT volunteer form (http://www.ala.org/nmrt/nmrt-committee-volunteer-form).

Offers to serve as member or chair of committees will not go out until late April/early May. Many thanks in advance for your patience.

Please contact Emily Prather-Rodgers directly (eapratherrodgers@noctrl.edu) if you have any questions. Thank you for your interest in and support of NMRT!

Midwintering in Seattle

This Midwinter is my last on the NMRT Board, and going back to Seattle seems like coming full circle.

Six years ago, Midwinter 2007 was held in Seattle, and it was my first ALA event EVER! I reported on the Executive Board meeting for Footnotes, and that’s where it all began. Unless I should say it began the first evening of Midwinter with the erstwhile NMRT Meet & Greet, where I rubbed shoulders (sometimes literally) with the NMRT elite; or perhaps it truly began the next night at the Midwinter Social, where I met lots of great people, including Michael Golrick and the then-infamous Aaron Dobbs, both very supportive NMRT alums. Al, my now-husband, was also at that Social…little did we know!

Thanks to then-Board members Amanda, Amy, Catherine, Courtney, Kara, Katie, Michelle, Nadine, Nanette, Sally, Sam and Kim, and everyone else I met at that conference. You were all so nice, and so welcoming, and you helped make me feel like I had something to offer. That conference was when ALA took my job and turned it into a career. I’ve spent almost 5 of the intervening years on the NMRT Board, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

My favorite part of conferences now is meeting folks who are like I used to be, and helping them find their place in ALA and the profession. I’m looking forward to ALA Midwinter 2013!

Speak Up: Developing Effective Public Speaking Skills

LLAMA/NMRT New Leaders Discussion Group invites the submission of proposals for “Discussion Starters” at its meeting at the 2013 ALA Midwinter Conference in Seattle, WA. A Discussion Starter is a short and informal presentation that aims to provide a starting point for lively conversations.

We look for enthusiastic Discussion Starters to share their experience (it could either be a positive experience or a lesson learned), helpful tips, and advice on the topics. A panel discussion format will be used for this part of the program. Each Discussion Starter will have 8 minutes to present their topic. We will then break into small groups (joined by Discussion Starters) for in-depth discussions of the topics and ideas raised.

At this year’s Midwinter conference, we are interested in topics focusing on how to develop public speaking skills to engage people and to effectively convey our message. We seek proposals for discussion starters that address this topic from a variety of angles, including (but not limited to):
• Techniques that have contributed to your successful public speaking experience
• Learning and growing from harrowing experiences
• Advice and tips based on experience

Proposals are due by November 30. Notification of acceptance will be made by December 20. Please submit your proposal using this form.
